Using SPORTFIT- What is involved in the SPORTFIT program ?


(1) 30 metre Sprint - What is being tested ?Being able to run and accelerate quickly from a standing start is an essential element of most team sports and many individual sports. Speed is also important in sports that require short bursts of high intensity activity such as Gaelic Football hurling, athletics, basketball and tennis. on, you’ll probably improve your score!

Speed  Challenge (30 Metre Sprint) Why is it important?

When you move quickly, your heart has to work really hard; the more you practice, the better your heart will perform and the healthier it will be. Think of it as lifting weights with your heart: as you do activities that improve your speed your heart gets stronger and can move blood more easily around your body. Being speedy also means that your legs can work hard and fast, and that they have a lot of power. Power helps to improve your speed, so when you next try the SportFit 30 Metre station, you’ll probably improve your score!
 
(2) 800 metre run - What is being tested ? Aerobic fitness is a measure of the efficiency of the cardiovascular system in getting oxygen to the muscles and putting them to work.Good aerobic fitness is an essential component of all sporting and recreational activities. With large aerobic capacity, activities can be performed more efficiently.The objective oto cover this distance as quickly as possible

(3) Basketball Throw - What is being tested ? -Muscular strength is defined as the maximum tension or force that a muscle can exert in a single contraction. Strength is an important part of almost every sporting activity. The basketball throw challenge is designed to give an indication of upper body strength.
Strength Challenge (Basketball Throw) Why is it important? Strength is one of the most important benefits of physical activity. When you are strong, your bones are healthier and your blood vessels are better able to move blood around your body. Also, with strength you can support your body weight, which allows you to perform many daily tasks such as lifting heavy things, carrying your school books, and throwing a ball for your dog. You’ll improve your score on the SportFit Basketball Throw station too!
(4)Partial Curl ups -What is being tested ? Muscular endurance is the ability of muscles to perform repeated contractions over a period of time.This quality is important in many athletic and sporting events, especially when the event lasts for a period of time and requires the repetition of the same movements.
Muscular Endurance (Partial Curl-Ups) Why is it important? Partial curl ups give an indication of your core strength; your core is the area around your tummy and back. There are a lot of muscles in this area and they are used almost constantly every day: they keep you upright, they help you bend over, they help you twist, and they help you bend backwards. Try out some of the activities listed on this site to improve your muscular endurance so the next time you try the Sport Fit Partial Curl Ups station you’ll be able to do more than you did the first time!
(5) Sit & Reach. What is being tested ? Muscular Flexibility is the ability of a joint to move freely through the entire range of motion.Muscular flexibility is especially important for the athlete, aiding not only in performance but also in the prevention of unnecessary injuries.
Flexibility Challenge (Sit and Reach) Why is it important? Flexibility is the ability to bend and stretch your body in many directions. If your muscles can stretch and bend easily, you are less likely to get injured than if your muscles are stiff and not stretched. It is important to establish and maintain good flexibility to keep your joints limber, and so that you’ll be better able to perform various activities, like the SportFit Sit & Reach station!

(6) Stork Stand - What is being tested ? Almost all sports require good balance. Static balance, the ability to remain balanced while not in motion, and dynamic balance, the ability to maintain balance while moving, are components of individual and team sports such as Gaelic football & Hurling,figure skating, cross country skiing,badminton, wrestling and gymnastics.
Balance Challenge (Stork Stand) Why is it important? Whether you’re out for a jog or just standing around with friends, your sense of balance helps to keep you upright and stable. Your body works constantly to hold you in place; without practice your body gets tired quickly and you’re more likely to fall over and hurt yourself. As well, balance helps to improve your posture which is important for health and maintaining strong bones.
(7) T-Drill - What is being Tested? Agility is the ability to change the direction of movement of the body quickly while moving and remaining balanced. Agility is an important component of many team and individual sports including ice hockey, figure skating, alpine skiing, judo, basketball, and wrestling.
Agility Challenge (T-drill) Why is it important? Agility contributes to your daily well being. It keeps you from tripping and slipping, and helps you to avoid collisions. Agile people tend to be good at games like basketball, volleyball and soccer, as well as the SportFit T-Drill station!
(8) Vertical Jump - What is being tested ? The vertical jump measures an individual’s ability to jump explosively in the vertical direction.Explosive power is a major performance characteristic of numerous sports including football & hurling, ice hockey, bobsleigh, figure skating, athletics, volleyball and basketball.
Power Challenge (Vertical Jump) Why is it important? Power determines how fast and how far you can move your body weight in a short period of time. Being powerful means that you’ll be better able to lift heavy objects or move yourself quickly. As you become more powerful, you’ll be able to jump higher, which means the next time your school does a SportFit Day you’ll improve your score on the Vertical Jump station.
